Justice Comes A’ (Robo)Calling

Well, I get the feeling Paul Schurick, the author of the infamous, racist, “The Schurick Doctrine,” is going to find it a little difficult to “relax” these days.

I say this in the wake of the jury’s decision today finding Schurick – the 2010 campaign manager for former governor Bobby Ehrlich Jr.  – guilty and convicting him on four election-law violations that blew up out of that insane RoboCall he OK’d on Election Day last November.

Specifically, what the jury in this case found Schurick guilty of was trying to influence votes through fraud, the lack of an authority line telling who paid for the call and two counts of conspiracy to commit those crimes.

As concerns the Robocall, itself, it was placed to 112,000 Democrats in Baltimore and Prince George’s County, with the obvious intention to suppress the African-American vote in the state’s two largest majority black jurisdictions. Those who received the calls were advised that they could “relax.” Gov. Martin O’Malley had already achieved his objectives and there was nothing left to do but to sit back and watch it on TV.

The jurors, one of whom called Schurick a “nice guy” after today’s verdict, simply didn’t fall for that ridiculous BS his attorney, A. Dwight Pettit, was pushing – all that nonsense about the RoboCall being “counterintuitive.” Of course, considering what he had to work with, I guess Pettit had no other options but to peddle such nonsense…

Facts are, indeed, stubborn things. And, in this case – what with Ehrlich-Goon Bernie Marczyk having emailed Schurick earlier on that fateful election-day 2010 and asking what Julius Henson (who’s case in the RoboCall scandal is coming up next February) needed in order to keep the vote down in Baltimore City – facts are what hung Paul Schurick.

(“What, me worry?” asks Paul Schurick ….Uh, yeah. I would definitely recommend worrying right about now.)

Besides the illegalities involved, and Pettit’s already said he will file an appeal on Schurick’s behalf, this entire Schurick engineered fiasco has reaped some further, serious, damage.  This damage is to the MDGOP, and from where I sit it looks pretty much incalculable.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: With or without Julius Henson’s help, Paul Schurick’s playing the race card is simply unforgiveable. He attempted to play with both the intelligence and emotions of Maryland’s black population, a population that Maryland Republicans NEED to woo – or at least not piss off for the Hell of it – which is exactly what Schurick did. I can’t wait to see the next time a Republican tells a black Marylander that the GOP, and not the Dems, have their best interests at heart.

Additionally, I really hope that Schurick’s employer at the time, Bobby Ehrlich, is not allowed to forever float above this entire mess. Take it from someone who knows, someone who’s also been under the spotlight (though never convicted) for political dirty tricks done while in Mr. Ehrlich’s employ, Bobby Ehrlich – the failed author whose ego knows no bounds – will attempt to do just that.

Just as I shed no tears when I got slammed for being the Prince of Darkness, I shed no tears for the author of the Racist “Schurick Doctrine.” That being said, it’s time for Bobby Ehrlich to claim his share of the infamy as well. No books Bobby may write, none of his juvenile laughing and joking on TV or the radio, nor whatever else he may try will ever change that. Paul Schurick is the Last of Mr. Ehrlich’s Legacy. Or, at least he should be.

For Schurick, sentencing is February 16th 2012. He’s looking at – but will never serve – 12 years. Frankly, I don’t think he should serve that amount of time but he should spend some time behind bars - not to mention be forever banned by both political parties. Something tells me that latter point will not be a problem…

The thing is, I’ve known Paul Schurick for something like 12 or 13 years. As I’ve stated previously, I’ve always known he was a bit of a fraud. The real difference now is that he’s a convicted one.

To quote Jerry Seinfeld in both style and meaning, “That’s a shame.”

Joe Steffen

Joe Steffen

Joe Steffen, aka "The Prince of Darkness," the nickname coming courtesy of former Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich. One time partisan attack dog, taker of swords and bullets, and one who would toss himself on the grenade without so much as blinking. Times have changed, and so have I. If you really want the lowdown, slanted though some of it may be, do a google search on "Joseph Steffen Prince of Darkness." Surprise! Regardless, no matter what you may now think...I'm not an "unrepentant terrorist" as is Bill Ayres. Or a "plagerizing soon to be again ex-journalist" - as is Michael Olesker. Or even a Plagerizing Vice President as is Joe Biden. I'm just me, the erstwhile Prince of Darkness, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet ;)
