A Look Inside the (Rick) Sanitarium

Sanitarium: An establishment for the medical treatment of people who are convalescing or have a chronic illness.

It’s got to be his collection of rockin’ sweater vests. The damned things must get a certain sector of the GOP all excited and ready to rock into the voting booth or head off to caucus meetings with their heads firmly planted up their ascots. I can’t think of any other reason why Rick Sanitarium – oh, excuse me, Santorum – carried Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado this past Tuesday night.

Okay, he’s an “anti-Romney,” I get that.  AndI understand the anti-Romney folks – as they’ve been all over the board this primary season: from Rick Perry to Herman Cain to the Serial Adulterer…and now, to Rick Santorum. I can only hope that Ron Paul or John Huntsman are next, because if the GOP is actually insane enough to nominate Santorum, well that’s akin to committing political suicide.

Let’s look at some facts, shall we?

While it’s true that Santorum has consistently held extremely restrictive socially conservative views, his record on fiscal issues has been decidedly mixed. For example, while a member of Congress, he indeed voted for the Bush tax cuts. Moreover, he repeatedly favored a balanced budget amendment.

On the other hand, Sanitarium supported budget busting federal programs in both education and transportation.  (So, how long would it take for a major tax increase to be necessary to balance that budget, Rick?) On top of that, Sanitarium frequently used earmarks to fund some massive – and massively expensive – Pennsylvania pork barrel projects. You can look it up.

Of course, now that he’s going national in his first election since his 17 percent BLOWOUT loss in his 2006 US Senate re-election campaign, Rick Sanitarium states he’s no longer for pork barrel spending, earmarks, and the like…blah, blah, blah.  And he’s entitled to change his mind – just as his fellow flip-flopper, Mittens Romney has repeatedly changed his.

Oh, and before I forget – and since Planned Parenthood is such a hot issue at present, what with all the controversy surrounding the Susan Komen Foundation - you might want to ask Rick how he was always so very, very pro-life…while at the same time casting vote after vote to continue Planned Parenthood’s funding.  Again, feel free look it up.

(Rockin’ that sweater vest, Rick Santorum pregames for the cameras)

Perhaps it’s to be expected from someone who has stated he doesn’t necessarily buy the “right to privacy” argument because it’s, you know, not in the constitution, but lastly – and most damaging, to my way of thinking – is that Rick Sanitarium is every bit as much of a social engineer from the right as Barack Obama is from the left.

The problem with that, of course, is that forced social engineering from the right is every bit as pernicious, prickly and freedom-robbing as is social engineering from the left.

With that in mind, in a 2005 NPR interview, Santorum gave this one quote that makes it impossible for me to ever vote for him:

“They (the “libertarianish right”) have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do. Government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulation low and that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues, you know, people should do whatever they want. Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world, and I think most conservatives understand that individuals can’t go it alone…”

It takes a village, right Rick?

And that, the Right Wing Social Engineering Mindset, is the chronic illness for which Rick Sanitarium must be treated, the illness that says “individuals can’t go it alone” without the government ordering them around and barking at them if one dares to step out of HIS line.

Rick Santorum: Political suicide for the GOP, folks.  Political suicide.

Joe Steffen

Joe Steffen, aka "The Prince of Darkness," the nickname coming courtesy of former Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich. One time partisan attack dog, taker of swords and bullets, and one who would toss himself on the grenade without so much as blinking. Times have changed, and so have I. If you really want the lowdown, slanted though some of it may be, do a google search on "Joseph Steffen Prince of Darkness." Surprise! Regardless, no matter what you may now think...I'm not an "unrepentant terrorist" as is Bill Ayres. Or a "plagerizing soon to be again ex-journalist" - as is Michael Olesker. Or even a Plagerizing Vice President as is Joe Biden. I'm just me, the erstwhile Prince of Darkness, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet ;)
