Irrelevant to All Worlds

It “ended my career and put my family through Hell, but it was a mistake that I made.” – Paul Schurick at his sentencing, 2/16/12.

The “it” Mr. Schurick is referring to is that infamous, racist, makes-no-sense RoboCall he authorized on behalf of former Maryland Governor Bobby Ehrlich’s reelection efforts on Election Day 2010. You know, the one in which the calls recipients – approxomatley 110,000 black folks in Baltimore City and Prince George’s County, MD – were told that they could “relax” because O’Malley (D) had been successful…despite the fact that the polls hadn’t closed.

Facts being what they are, the jury convicted Schurick of trying to influence votes through fraud, not  identifying the source of the calls, and two counts of conspiracy to commit those crimes.

While begging for leniency from Judge Lawrence P. Fletcher-Hill during the sentencing, Schurick added that he “made a decision that destroyed the legacy” of his career. “I am out of business,” he said.

In other words, Schurick admitted to being more or less irrelevant to his own world.

Fortunately for him, however, Schurick will also remain irrelevant to Bubba’s World as, despite the crimes for which he was convicted, he will serve no jail time.  Oh, he was sentenced to one year in jail, alright, but that year was suspended.

In addition, Schurick got hit with 30 days of home detention, 4 years of probation, during which period of time he is forbidden to work as a paid political dude, and 500 hours of community service – to be split between Baltimore City and Prince George’s County, MD…so be sure to say hi to him if you see Paul Schurick picking up trash at the side of the road!

(Paul Schurick’s new fancy footwear)

In the end, despite all the recent cajoling from Bob Ehrlich, the guy whose campaign he was managing at the time he unleashed the ridiculously race baiting RoboCalls, for folks to write letters for Paul Schurck; Reach out to Paul Schurick; and be sure to not toss anything at Schurick while he’s picking up garbage or painting park benches as part of his community service, Schurick takes a light to middling hit.  I say this because ol’ Paul was facing up to 12 years in jail.

More than just trying to get people to wrap Shurick in warm, cozy thoughts, though, Ehrlich was also one of dozens to send a letter of support for Schurick to the judge.  In his letter, Bobby Ehrlich tried to slough off Schurick’s crimes as, you know, just one of those things:

“The facts herein are not particularly complicated: a mistake was made in the heat of a high stakes, tension filled day – a day full of difficult decisions made on the run,” Ehrlich wrote, adding that such “mistakes” do not come with ”a ‘reset’ button.”

In other words, Ehrlich’s saying…’Uh, yeah, Paul did a bad thing, but what the Hell? If he could undo it, he might push reset.’ What?

To be blunt, Ehrlich should be ashamed of himself for hinting with a written nod and a wink that it was just a “mistake.” It was a bit more than a mistake…it was a crime, four of them actually, that Paul Schurick was first nailed and now sentenced, on.

Speaking of “being ashamed,” those who showed up in court today fervently supporting Paul Schurick, the Democrat who got nailed while working for a GOP Governor-One-Term-Wannabe-Again, should also feel at least a smidgen of shame. And, unlike Ehrlich, they don’t even have a legacy to be on the lookout for.

As for Ehrlich, his legacy is both intact and in place: A one term Governor cum struggling author and columnist with a Prince of Darkness in his past and a Convict in his present. It doesn’t get any better than that, does it?

And, in case you were wondering, despite his blathering to get everyone to show Paul Schurick some love, Bobby Ehrlich never even bothered to show up for his guy in court today.

I guess that, at the end of the day, Paul Schurick’s now irrelevant to Bobby’s Irrelevant World as well.  That’s a shame. ; )

Joe Steffen

Joe Steffen, aka "The Prince of Darkness," the nickname coming courtesy of former Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich. One time partisan attack dog, taker of swords and bullets, and one who would toss himself on the grenade without so much as blinking. Times have changed, and so have I. If you really want the lowdown, slanted though some of it may be, do a google search on "Joseph Steffen Prince of Darkness." Surprise! Regardless, no matter what you may now think...I'm not an "unrepentant terrorist" as is Bill Ayres. Or a "plagerizing soon to be again ex-journalist" - as is Michael Olesker. Or even a Plagerizing Vice President as is Joe Biden. I'm just me, the erstwhile Prince of Darkness, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet ;)
